18 steps and 8 advice's to optimize PC performance

This topic will guide you to speed-up and optimize your windows 10 computer as well as older windows operating systems such as windows 8, 7, vista, and windows XP, through 18 steps and 8 Golden advises.

If you are suffering from slow windows performance, need to learn how to make games run faster on windows 10 laptop, and/or need to speed-up windows 10 start-up or boot,  so this topic will guide you to the best working tips and advises to get that. 

The steps and Advises will include the following:
A- Changes in windows setting (start-up, extra visual effects, power setting, and notifications).
B-Delete unnecessary build-in apps, data of removed apps, temp. files of system and other apps, ... etc.
C- Security-related actions (clean-up virus, spywares)
D- Golden advice's to keep your PC very fast and clean from viruses and malware's.
E- Video tutorial to show you how to do those changes step by step.

Please create a restore point for windows before and after doing the next changes to your system, to enable you restoring your windows in case you do a mistake. To learn how to create system restore click here.


FIRST: Changes in windows settings:

a - Stop visual effects to enhance PC performance:

  • From search box, search for sysdm.cpl and open it, or click on Windows+R keys from keyboard to open Run Commander, and type sysdm.cpl into the box then click OK to open System properties.
  • Navigate to advancedPerformanceSetting.
  • Check Adjust for best Performance option then click OK to save changes.

 b - Decrease or stop start-up delay:
       (if you have more than one: operating system installed or other start-up-related problems).

  • From search box, search for sysdm.cpl and open it, or click on Windows+R keys from keyboard to open Run Commander, and type sysdm.cpl into the box then click OK to open System properties.
  • Navigate to advanced> Startup & Recovery> Setting.
  • Change the delay time to 5 seconds or less.

c- Enable fast windows start-up:
  • Right-click on Start icon and open Power Options.
  • Click on Choose what the power buttons do option.
  • Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Click on Turn on fast start-up (recommended) option, then click on Save Changes.

d- Change power plan:

  • Right-click on Start icon and open Power Options.
  • Choose either Balance OR High performance Plan.

(Make sure that Power Saving mode is unchecked, unless you need to preserve battery charging).

e - Disable unnecessary start up apps:

  • Right-click on Task-par and open Task Manager.
  • Go to Start-up Panel and disable ONLY AND ONLY unnecessary apps that start with windows and you don't frequently use.

(Note: Some applications need to allow it's automatic start-up with windows boot in a way to works properly).

f- Disable unnecessary services:

(Important: you should hide Microsoft services).

  • 1-From search box, search for msconfig.exe and open it.
  • 2- Navigate to Services Panel and Check Hide all Microsoft services option.
  • 3- Right-click on Task-par and open Task Manager.
  • 4- Navigate to Services Panel and stop all services belong to unnecessary apps.

(Important: DON'T disable unknown services, and disable only services belongs to apps that you known, OR [Right-click on any service then click on search online to know about that service before you disable it]).

g- Disable unnecessary notifications:

  • Click on notification icon> All setting> System > Notifications & Actions.
  • Disable all notifications.

h- Stop indexing of C disk:

(Note: This will enhance PC performance, but will decrease local search speed on C disk).

  • Right-click on C disk and choose properties.
  • From General panel, uncheck Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties option.


SECOND: Deletion and clean-up steps:

a- Remove unnecessary build-in/installed apps (one by one):

  • Click on notification icon >All settingSystemApps & Features Panel.
  • Delete build-in apps that you are not need such as news app and others.
  • Delete apps that you have installed to your PC but you are not need it now.

Also you can go to installed apps by Right click on start icon then select Programs and Feature option.

b- Removing System & app's temp files:

  1. Removing temporary system files such as update and upgrade junk files.
  2. Removing temporary files and folders of applications 
  3. Removing temporary files, folders and browsing history of visited websites for all internet browsers, such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, opera, Firefox, ...etc.

  • Close all opened apps.
  • From Keyboard press on Windows+R keys.
  • Type %temp% in box then click OK.
  • From Keyboard press on Ctrl+A keys to select all files and folders.
  • Click on Sheft+Delete keys to remove all temporary files and folders permanently. 
(Caution: This step will remove all files and folders permanently without sending them to recycle Bin).
  • Again, From Keyboard press on Windows+R keys and type temp in box then click OK then click on continue.
  • From Keyboard press on Ctrl+A keys to select all files and folders, then press on Sheft+Delete keys to remove all permanently.
  • Again, From Keyboard press on Windows+R keys and type prefetch in box then click OK then click on continue.
  • From Keyboard press on Ctrl+A keys to select all files and folders, then press on Sheft+Delete keys to remove all permanently.

c- Disk cleanup:

  • From search box, search for disk clean-up and open it. 
  • Choose C desk and click OK.
  • You can check/uncheck other options or let the selection as default then click clean up system files.
  • Click on OK then Delete files.

  d- Registry cleanup:

(Important: you should make back-up for registry).

  • Press on Windows+R keys from keyboard, and type regedit.exe then click OK to open Registry editor.
  • Go to File > Export to make Backup for registry data.
  • Choose storage location and enter name for backup file. 
  • Check All option from lower corner of panel.
  • Click save.
  • Now you need to download app or tool to clean up registry.

  • After downloading registry cleaner app, install it.
  • Click Scan now to scan your registry.

NOTE: You may loss registration of some paid apps with some registry cleaner tools, so you may need to re-register them after clean-up steps or restore registry entries from created backup on previous steps by choosing import instead of export.

  • When the tool finishes scan, you can uncheck/deselect any option to exclude it, or let all as default, then click Repair.


THIRD- Virus and malware clean-up:

a- Do a full System scan using antivirus:

  • Start Avira or any installed antivirus then do a full scan for your computer.
  • When scanning finished, select all detected viruses and clean them up.

b- Using extra tool to scan for addwares & spywares:

Because the most common causes of speed problems of PC are the viruses and other malweres, you have
to install extra tool to scan your PC (BUT, the extra tool must be works as portable app, to avoid extra speed problems that may result from presence more than one antivirus installed).



1- DON’T overwhelm your PC with many unnecessary apps or with large games, or with app that your PC not met its minimum requirements, especially those that need to work in background like antiviruses.

2- DON’T install more than one antivirus to your computer at the same time.

3- AVOID saving your files (such as videos, photos, PDF, zip, RAR, ...etc.) on C disk, instead save them on other disk partition like D or E.

4- If you are use your PC for long time without shutting it down, it will bother you with slow performance or freezing, so shut it down now to give it a rest.

5- In relation to viruses and other security issues, remember that the Prevention is better than cure, so keep your PC clean from viruses and malwares by the following:
