How to Update BIOS From USB Drive on Dell Laptops [Hp, Toshiba, Asus, Acer]

On this topic I will show you how to update BIOS firmware on Dell laptops from bootable USB flash card directly and easily.

BIOS is an acronym which stands for basic input/output system. It is the boot loader which help operating system and hardware to start consistently and properly. It is not an app or tool that can be installed into hard drives like other apps, instead, it is firmware that came pre-installed on a small chip on motherboard.

unlike apps and/or operating systems, BIOS didn't necessitate frequently update, but sometimes you may be enforced to update your BIOS firmware in a way to fix error (such as boot errors) or to support new hardware (for example in case you update your CBU or other hardware's that are newer to your BIOS and/or need some additional features) or new operating system.

There are other ways that can be used in updating Bios firmware on any computers such as automatic update and manual update from inside the operating system ( Linux, window, ...etc.), but the way on this topic (which is the updating from bootable USB pin card) is the most reasonable way to learn or to follow, because it could be used in case of operating system failed to boot or even if there is no hard drive installed on computer or laptop.

ATTENTION:
  • DON'T UPDATE YOUR BIOS UNLESS THE NEW UPDATE IS IMPORTANT TO FIX AN ISSUE OR TO SUPPORT NEW OR EXISTING OPERATING SYSTEM OR NEW OR EXISTING  HARDWARE AS INDICATED BY MANUFACTURER OF YOUR MOTHERBOARD OR LAPTOP (such as Sony, Toshiba, dell, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, apple, ... etc.).
  • MAKE SURE TO FLASH THE EXACT UPDATING FILE THAT IS APPLICABLE TO YOUR LAPTOP OR MOTHERBOARD, BECAUSE WRONG FILE COULD BRICKS YOUR MOTHERBOARD.
  • TO KNOW THE EXACT UPDATING FILE USE THE SERVICE TAG THAT CAME WITH YOUR LAPTOP AND SEARCH FOR UPDATING FILE BASED ON IT FROM WEBSITE OF LAPTOP OR MOTHERBOARD MANUFACTURER (see picture below for service tag).
  • POWER OFF LAPTOP FOR ANY REASON DURING BIOS UPDATING PROCESS, COULD BRICK YOUR MOTHERBOARD, AND YOUR LAPTOP WOULD NOT BOOT UP ANYMORE.
  • THE STEPS AND FILES USED ON THIS TOPIC AND ITS VIDEO, ARE APPLICABLE TO DELL LAPTOP LATITUDE E6420 (SERVICE TAG: 5NRPGV1), HOWEVER THE STEPS ARE APPLICABLE TO OTHER MANUFACTURERS BUT NOT FILES, ALTHOUGH THIS TOOL THAT I USED TO MAKE BOOTABLE USB DRIVE, COULD BE USED WITH OTHER DELL MODELS OR OTHER MANUFACTURERS.
  • HOWEVER, THIS METHOD IS 100% GUARNTEED TO BE SAVE UNDER CORRECT CIRCUMSTANCES, WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY RISKS OF USING THIS METHOD.

Steps:
  1. Locate suitable booting tool from website of your laptop's manufacturer that will help you in making USB card as bootable device. Click here to download Dell Diagnostic Distribution Package (DDDP).

  2. After downloading tool, install it as default installation (it can be download and installed in other computer).
  3. Open tool folder (usually C:\Dell) and navigate to DIAG folder (C:\Dell\Drivers\R174621\DIAGS) and remove all files inside DIAG folder except the following five files:                                                   COMMAND.COM
    DELLBIO.BIN
    DELLRMK.BIN
    AUTOEXEC.BAT
    CONFIG.SYS
  4. Navigate to {C:\Dell\Drivers\R174621} and double-click on the DDDP executable file to start the tool.
  5. Choose Install to a USB flash drive from tool interface and follow the instructions and caution. (ATTENTION: This operation will delete all files and folders inside the USB Flash drive, so you may need to make pack up for your files and folders on before you proceed).
  6. Search for BIOS update file that is applicable to your laptop service tag (usually from website of your laptop manufacturer)then download it (in my case (as you will see in video), I used this file to update BIOS firmware of Dell laptop Latitude Model E6420 (Service tag: 5NRPGV1) and I updated it from Version A19 to A25.
  7. Rename the BIOS update file to any short name in a way to remember it (e.g. 12345), because you will need the name during flashing process.
  8. Connect the USB flash drive to laptop that you need to update its BIOS.
  9. Restart the laptop and press f12 key continuously until boot options appear(If your PC failed to enter to boot options after you press F12 key correctly, remove hard disk and boot PC without hard disk).
  10. Select to boot from USB flash drive.
  11. Write the name of BIOS update file as 12345.exe and press enter to continuous.
  12. Type y in both next dialogue screens to start flashing process.

  3. Sorry Almella for late response;
It will be save to use DDDP tool to make a bootable usb drive, but you should use the suitable bios updating file, because the wrong one is the most concern about updating success or failure.
